Last night I tried to explain to people why I love baking bread. It was the Pecha Kucha San Diego night #11 and folks were packed into the lounge at the W Hotel to hear on subjects ranging from car design to fashion, water conservation to bread. For my part I tried to keep it entertaining. With just six minutes and forty seconds to talk, you’re not going to give a graduate-level lecture. So I showed off some pictures of bread, made a few jokes, and handed out some of my sourdough bread at the end. We returned home with only 1 or 2 slices, so I think I calculated right: 6 loaves sliced up in thick pieces for people to enjoy. After my talk it was gratifying to see the crowd munching away on bread that I’d made from scratch, and you could smell fresh bread in the air as the baskets were passed around. As I said in the talk, making food of any kind is an act of provision, and it’s good for the soul to provide for people and to break bread together. What a wonderful night!
